Kremnica

District: Žiar nad Hronom

County: Banskobystrický

Region: Pohronie

Description:

The tradition of extraction of precious metals at Kremnica was taken up by minting of coins - renowed Kremnica dukats, groschen and denars, which was introduced here by king Charles Robert of Anjou in 1328, but the mining surely started much sooner. Kremnica became the seat of the Hungarian Chamber of Mines and a mint was opened there too.
Kremnica is overlooked by a town castle built in 14th century, formerly the seat of the chamber baron. The castle is dominated by a church with two steeples. The castle complex also contains a partly preserved Gothic town hall and is encircled by a strong wall reinforced with turrets and towers, the best preserved one being the northern gate tower.
The mining boom came to an end in the late 15th century and early 16. century the town´s development slowed down. Since then construction activity was very limited. The medieval town received a Baroque church and a Franciscan monastery, both of which were built in the main square in place of earlier Gothic houses. Burger houses, following their renovation, provide attractive dwellings. On the square you can find the Museum of Coins and Medals.
