The Tatra Mountains are situated in the central part of the 1200 km long Carpathian arch. The massif of the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry) is joined by the West Tatras in the west and the Balianske Tatry Mountains in the east. There are 300 peaks and towers, more of them are higher than 2500 m above sea level.
- the first tourist visit to the High Tatras was recorded in 1565, when the princess Beata Lansky and her company from the town Kežmarok organized a trip to the valley of the brook Biela voda.
- Important part in the history and the exploration of the High Tatras was played by David Frölich, who climbed a peak Kežmarský štít in 1615
- 1970 – the World Championship in Nordic Skiing Events
- there is the seat of the Tatras National Park with the area 74111 ha – the largest and the oldest national park in Slovakia (established in 1949)
- all main trails are opened to public between the June 15th til the October 31st. During the winter season trails are opened the trails which run to the hotels and chalets
- a unique Symbolic cemetery is located in Mengusovska dolina valley
- The central transport link is based upon the Cesta Slobody road which connects the western Tatra settlement of Podbanske with Tatranská Kotlina in the east. The international airport Poprad Tatry is the ideal gateway to the Tatras.
- The unique mountain climate of the Tatras mountain region and the healing effect upon human body was one of the fundamental reasons to establish the settlements in the High Tatras. The early founders of these settlements were mainly physicians and sanatorium owners
- The High Tatra mountain area is an ideal place for winter sports
Ski regions:
Smokovce (1875) – the administrative centre of the High Tatras with the skicentreHrebienok (1310 o.s.l.)
Tatranská Lomnica (1883) – the elegant sport resort with Skalnaté Pleso (1750 o.s.l.) – the highest and the best Tatra resort for downhill skiing. The access is possible from Tatranská Lomnica by the cable care.
Štrbské Pleso (1872) – the most important winter sport resort in High Tatras and Mecca of the nordic ski events. (1265 o.s.l.)
